First
and most importantly, all of our monthly launches are FREE, open to the
public, and very family oriented. Launches are typically held
on the last Saturday of every month at the open
field between Tinseltown Theater and Kohl's Department Store near the
intersection of Siegen Lane and I-10 in Baton Rouge (at least for
now). Occasionally the dates and/or location will be altered
due to various reasons and the weather has a direct influence on launch
events, therefore check this website for up to date information
regarding the schedule and last minute launch status.
Launches usually start around 9 - 9:30 am and continue on until around
noon.
At
our typical monthly launches, the type of rockets most often flown are
the same type sold from the shelves at your local hobby shops, and
stores like Hobby Lobby, Michael's, and even Walmart and Target.
Attendees
on a regular basis range in age from about 3 or 4 years on
up. The majority of our members are adults, mostly those who
flew rockets as a kid and then rediscovered the hobby years later as an
adult, usually through their kids when they became curious about
them. Although the regular attendance is usually mostly
adult, we always welcome young rocket enthusiasts and will be more than
happy to provide assistance to them. We simply ask that there
be an adult with them at all times.
Although
our launches are run in a very casual and informal manner, the rules
and guidelines set forth in the NAR Model Rocket Safety Code as well as
the High Power Safety Code are strictly enforced and adhered to.
There
is always plenty of launch equipment that can be used if you do not
have your own. Even if you do not have your own rocket(s), if
you just think you want to see or learn more about what the hobby is
about, you are more than welcome. At most launches with kids
in attendance, the club will have a free drawing for a rocket kit or
two for the kids.
